Ambient Booms

The perfect balance of strength, weight, and features

With the industry's best balance of strength, weight, and features, Ambient boom poles are the choice worldwide for sound recordists in TV, Film and classical music recording. With over 12,000 booms in active service and negligible breakages, Ambient booms are exceptionally strong, light weight, and hard wearing. The available sizes and strengths cover all requirements of the industry.

Ambient booms are available in two series: Quickpole, and Quickpole Light. In addition, select booms can be configured for internal spiral cabling (QL-series) or straight internal cabling (QP- and QL-series).

Key Ambient Features

  • The industry's strongest and stiffest carbon-fiber tubing
  • Machined, stainless-steel 3/8" threaded tip for long life
  • Simple, secure screw locks with extended threads for lifetime durability
  • External aluminium collars for additional tip strength
  • Internal spacer ring of nylon felt for smooth action and easy servicing
  • Special collet retention pin prevents intersegment twisting
  • Very low transmission of boom "handling noise"
  • Booms do not get tight when cold or wet
  • Booms can be quickly disassembled for cleaning or servicing

QuickPole Standard Booms

Ambient Quickpole

Quickpole booms (QP) are constructed using high modulus carbon fibre tubing with 1.5 mm wall thickness, giving excellent stiffness for lengths over 5 meters. Due to the wall thickness and carbon fiber crosswinding, the tubes are very strong in the compression mode and can be stood on without breaking. Standard booms are available in numerous lengths with 30 mm dia. outside tubing. A 35 mm dia extension is available for long booms, and for the small ones if they are to be used in a Manfrotto stand. The extension has the added advantage that it can be extended like the other segments. The extension is fitted like an extra segment and can be left on the boom.

Models Length Weight
QP470 84–273 cm, (33–107 in) xx grams
QP480 105–345 cm, (41–146 in)
QP4140 154–540 cm, (61–213 in)

Quickpole Light Weight Booms

Quickpole Light boom

Quickpole Light (QL) are made with a lighter 1 mm wall thickness woven carbon fiber tubing with downsized alumimum screwlocks. These lightweight booms are very strong and can stand up to the rigors of ENG work. They are available in four or five segment versions allowing longer booms to fit in flight cases. QL booms have been optimized for weight without sacrificing any of the engineering quality seen in the standard range.

Models Length Weight
QL570 72–266 cm, (28–105 in) xx grams
QL580 79–325 cm, (31–128 in)
QL5100 102–405 cm, (40–159 in)

Cabled Booms

Ambient booms are available in cabled versions. Both QP and QL series can be ordered with internal cabling, either spiral or straight.

Jumbo Booms

Jumbo Booms

Jumbo booms can be extended up to 12 meters and use segments up to 40 mm in diameter. While not suitable for hand held use, numerous accessories are available for mounting jumbo booms on Manfrotto stands with a cantilevering angle bracket and counterweight. In this configuration they can be used to place microphones up to 12 meters above ground level for studio, classical music on location, church organ, feature film crowd scenes, etc. Jumbos can also be used to position small cameras, lights, measuring instruments and antenna.

A-Ray

Surround Support

A-Ray

User Guide (8k)

The uniquely-designed A-Ray is a five-axis variable microphone support made of telescoping carbon fiber tubing and a central aluminium section with sliding nodes. The telescopic tubes are fixed to special nodes with adjustable toothed flanges. The nodes can slide up and down the main central bar and segments can be set at different angles to the nodes by loosening the toothed flanges and re-tightening.

With nearly infinite microphone placement between 60 cm and 2 meter diameter, the A-Ray can be hung or supported from a third node which can be moved to find the balance point.

Using other components made by Ambient such as Quickpole: carbon fibre boom poles. The Floater: soft suspension. Quicklock: quick release tip. Mike link: vertical suspension swivel etc, a complete recording or experimental microphone support system can be assembled.

Key features include:

  • Up to five microphones can be variably placed up to 2 meters away from each other using the telescopic tubes and the toothed flange elements at the node points.
  • Additional nodes can be added to make a seven-microphone array
  • Microphones can be placed in 3 dimensions by re-orienting a node at 90 degrees to the others
  • Toothed flange and square central tube prevents movement after setup giving a „Locked“ array.
  • All joints are tightened with lever clamps allowing quick and easy adjustment.
  • Support node can be moved to balance the array.
  • Using a Floater and the Ambient Mike Link the array can be soft suspended avoiding vibrations
